Outdoor lighting tips: How to create a glowing garden…

March 4, 2026 by viridity

As daylight fades, lights bring your outdoors to life. From twinkling fairy lights to bold spotlights on feature plants, the right lighting can transform patios, pergolas and corners into a magical evening escape, while keeping paths and steps safely lit.

Light it right

Don’t just scatter lights around. We’ve all done it – added a few solar lights along a path, only to realise later that when you needed a light next to the front door or a spotlight on a feature tree, suddenly the colours and styles don’t match, and everything looks a bit random.

Start by thinking about what you want to highlight and how you’ll use the space after dark. Seating areas benefit from gentle, ambient lighting for comfort, while paths and entryways, such as front and back doors, require practical illumination.

Trees, plants, sculptures and water features can be enhanced with accent lighting, and steps, stairways or changes in level can be marked with subtle lights for safety.

Making magic after dark

With your key features in mind, it’s time to bring them to life. For paths and steps, deck-mounted LED strips or recessed step lights create a sleek, integrated look, while solar bollards or stake lights offer flexible, easy-to-install options. Small lanterns or fairy lights add subtle charm to narrower walkways or intimate corners.

Layering different light types adds depth and dimension to your garden.

Upward spotlights bring trees, sculptures or garden arches to life as striking focal points, while downlights create a gentle overall atmosphere. Festoon or string lights add a touch of whimsy; hung over a pergola, along a fence or woven through tree branches, they create an enchanting evening scene.

Lighting can also be used to define zones. Overhead lights – whether string lights or downlights – keep al fresco dining areas well-lit while maintaining a soft, inviting glow. Cosy seating nooks benefit from soft downlights or path and stake lights, and quiet corners for reading or reflection can be enhanced with a subtle uplight or lantern tucked among plants.

Smart lighting

Modern technology makes it even easier to create a sense of mood and convenience. Automation or timers can switch lights on and off at sunset, while Bluetooth or smart controls let you adjust brightness without leaving your chair.

Consider subtle colour lighting to highlight special features or add seasonal interest – soft amber for warm ambience or gentle cool tones for water features – but keep it understated so your garden feels inviting rather than theatrical.
